July – August 2014

Lindsey Browns MX5 in the new livery

Intro from Rex

July started off with more legends and drivers dinners than you could poke a stick at with some heavy veterans and newbies entertaining punters with their tales of success and misfortune on and off the track.  I’m sure all who went enjoyed themselves.

Todd Martin who always puts on a good show had a well-attended car show at Jezzine Barracks for the drivers welcoming party followed by a display at Reid Park during the V8 Supercar event which was well attended. One group of Mini Owners came up all the way from Mackay and the Central Coast to exhibit their cars and there were some really good examples of the Mini. Surprisingly none from Townsville.

Sunday 13th July the club had  breakfast at the Townsville Yacht Club/Motor Boat Club which was very well attended followed by a Poker Run around the traps. A good morning and certainly one we need to do again. We had originally booked  the Fish In at the Rock Pool which has recently been refurbished and under all new management.  Unfortunately this day coincided with a Marathon resulting in many roads around the Strand/Rock Pool area being closed so will try to get in there again before the end of the year.

Sunday  10th August, day after Round 5 of the sprints, the Kart Club held a working bee to tidy up around the place and also get a few major items sorted out and ticked off their ground  and infrastructure maintenance  agenda. Glen Stewart, one of the Kart Club committee members asked for some assistance and believe Lindsey Brown , Peter Collard, Mick Slattery and Les Gibney  were the only ones to front up.  Glen was very grateful as they did  some hard yakka  particularly with things that relate directly to the Marque Club.  Lindsey had a busy day, taking his MX5 over to the Bluewater Car Show  first and returning to  mowing virtually the entire kart complex. Big thanks to these members for rising to the challenge and doing  such a stellar job.

Sunday 17th was Skimmo’s big day holding his favourite  Marque Car Club show in the Cotters Market.  This was well attended and showed some really good vehicles we hadn’t seen before thanks to some new members we have. The public loved the cars on show but the stall vendors were the happiest, it brought more people out to see the cars and off course check out their stalls and spend a few dollars.

Not long now and we will be advertising the Awards Night/Christmas Party which is happening on the 15th November and the venue is going to be at the Metropole again. Once Tracey has the details sorted  and confirmed we will be requesting members to register as seating is limited to 100 if my memory serves me correctly.  Last year was a great event and this year should be even better.

Todd Martin has a Super Cruise planned for Father’s Day September the 7th  which is another drive to Halifax, similar to the last one he did.  This one is in aid of Charity for another local in need of assistance.  I have put out a couple of emails regarding this event and will continue to do so in the next couple of weeks.  If you do decide to participate please let me know so I can advise Todd of the numbers.

Other big event for September is the Reid Park  2 day sprint event which is being held on September  13th and 14th.

Finally, this weekend is the Cancer Council Relay for Life which is being held at the Tony Ireland Stadium again and commences at midday on the Saturday and finishes after breakfast on the Sunday. Spare a thought for those doing the walk and if you get the chance go and cheer them on or do a couple of laps to boost their spirits. I am sure they will be very grateful for the company.

Take care out there. Cheers,

Presidents Blog.

Christmas is fast approaching remember to mark the 15th November on your social calendar for the club Christmas party, email will be sent soon with all the details.  Social events have again been very busy with many too choose from, unfortunately I have missed a few but those I have attended have been very good.  I attended the club breakfast at the Yacht Club and we had a good attendance from our club and we all enjoyed the food and company.

I heard the Cairns swap meet was once again a good weekend and worth the drive to check out what was on offer at the swap as well as turning it into a weekend away.   The Pub dinner at the Bohle Barn was well attended and I was able to catch up with most people for a chat or two.

Round 5 of the Bitumen Sprint went well with lots of drivers PB’s being broken, again a great event with no major issues all due to our volunteers and officials and of course the drivers.  Everything is on track for the next driving event at Reid Park V8 track, a two day event 13 and 14 September.

A big thank you to our club members Lindsay Brown, Mick Slattery and Peter Collard who gave up their valuable weekend time on Sunday 10th August to attend the Kart Club’s working bee.  Lindsay mowed and cleared the area of land at the end of the 90 metre straight and on the same day had his car on display at the Bluewater Car Show.  Thank you very much guys.

Coming up is a special Fathers Day Cruise being organised by Todd Martin, flyers have been emailed to club members, this should be a great day as Todd always puts on a good event and if like last year the BBQ at the Halifax Hotel will be brilliant and the event is a fundraiser for a good cause, please support.

Mopar to ya,

Les.

Cotters Market Car Show. Sunday 17th August 2014

John O’Donoghue Fiat X19

Pat Donlan’s 190SL

The contribution some of our new members brought to the show  made a huge difference to the line up at this years show with their cars.  It has been awhile since we had something new as in different, brand, model type of cars and this year we had 5.  Two from existing members and three from  new members.  For starters Ray Scagliotti brought his Lotus 11 along which provided a big draw card being so different and certainly set the scene as a fair dinkum track car. Rod and Cynthia Zaverdinos brought along Cynthia’s new Porche Cayman.  Unfortunately Rods GSM Dart wasn’t quite ready to present on the day but by all accounts it will be another show stopper when he does finally get it  finished.  It has been completely re built with all the running gear including the chassis being completely replaced with new. As for the new members, we have to thank Pat Donlan for bringing his oh so immaculate Mercedes Benz 190SL Roadster. I think he picked up a few trophies the other week at Bluewater and rightly so as he has done a beautiful job on restoring it.  Chris Mills brought along his Lancia Fulvia Coupe, another rare machine seldom seen these days and hopefully we will all see a lot more of it on club outings. The inclined engine with it’s unusual V configuration is worth a look. Another new member who has links  way back with some of the original Marque club members from the early days  is John O’Donoghue  and he brought along his  green Fiat X19. Lastly but not least, Geoff Veal managed to come along with his magic MG Magnet.  We don’t often see Tony Denyers Triumph TR3 other than at the sprints so it was a welcome surprise to see his exceptional car on show.

Chris Mills Lancia

There was a good cross section of cars on show this year with Yorky, Eric, Dave, Gordon  and Jeff Sutherland bringing their cars, Phil Case in his Healey. Lionel Timmins with his Cobra, Brownie with his 350Z ( we were hoping to see Michele Seymour with her 370Z). There were three MX5’s  with Ian Cooke  driving Ray Scag’s and Lindsey Brown with his Bumble Bee. Rob Harris was there too with his Z3. Gary  Hickey brought along Graham Williams MGB  ( Graham couldn’t make it) with Janelle in the HBR yella terra.  Steve Hogan had his incredible Aston Martin and Trevor Griffiths was there with his Corvette and lastly two Holdens, Rob Tyrrell’s Red  GTS and Bev Church with her Commadore.

Humour.

Paddy took 2 stuffed dogs to the Antiques Road show.

”Ooh”, said the presenter. “This is a very rare set produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists who operated in London at the turn of last century.  Do you have any idea what they would fetch if they were in good condition?”
“Sticks”, said Paddy
