NEWSLETTER Vol 4 Issue 5
May – June 2014
Intro from Rex,
Well it’s been an interesting couple of months and I do apologise for not getting a Newsletter out for May but I have had my hands full in my personal life this last couple of months. The biggest event for May was the Trivia night that had taken a fair bit of planning on Tracey, Kat and Mel’s part which was rewarded with a good turn out and plenty of give a ways for the evening. Todd Martin did an amazing job once again. Thank you Todd for your continued support, not only for motor sport as a whole in Townsville but for what you do for our club.
Yorky was lead on the Heritage Show that was organised by the Townsville City Council. This show was held in the West End Park on Ingham Road and attracted a wide variety of classic, vintage and unusual things. Yorky and his square rigger mates including Eric, Jeff, Gordon, Graham and Dave (apologies for the ones I have left out) put on a good display with a few new entries appearing this year including Steve Hogan’s grand Aston Martin, Troy Bullimore’s Mercedes 190SL and Errol Reeves Morgan.
The Ingham Bent Rods Show and Swap Meet held on 25th May was well organised this year with a good selection of cars on show. We organised a drive up to Ingham to view the show followed by a drive to Halifax for Lunch. We had a few cars join the drive to Ingham and from there we joined forces with the Saints Hot Rod Club and cruised up to Halifax. President Les had phoned the pub earlier in the week to organise and confirm they would be open for lunch. We had enjoyed a great drive and lunch to this pub last year with one of Todd Martins events so we were looking forward to a good feed when we got there. You can imagine the surprise then when we were told that they were not serving lunch that day. The biggest blow was they waited till we had purchased drinks at the bar first before making the announcement. Not beaten, we cruised up to Lucinda where we were welcomed with this blackboard, well positioned on the veranda and carefully scribed in bold white chalk ”Sunday BBQ Lunch $15.00”. Bewdy! We began ordering only to be told that although the board outside may have said $15 we were being charged $19.50 and when challenged the manageress stated quite clearly that it was her pub and she charged what she wanted. This is the second time this particular pub has hiked up the prices when we have walked in. Takes the edge of a top day.
All British Day Sunday 15th June. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this show due to work commitments but believe it was well attended. The Raffle for the 3 day passes to the V8 races was drawn and two lucky ticket holders, Kas Doble and Peter Weber won 2 tickets each courtesy of V8 Supercars.’ Proceeds from this raffle went to the Cancer Council Relay For Life.
The Marque Classic event run on the 21st and 22nd June was organised by Skimmo and attracted 15 entrants. More on this later.
Pub Dinner for July is going to be at the Vale Hotel on Ross River Road. Well that’s it from me, take care out there. Cheers, Rex.
Presidents Blog.
As you can see from Rex’s coverage of our social events there has been a wide variety of events to attend during the last couple of months. The cooler months bring out more events and make it difficult to choose which one to attend.
The V8’s are upon us and there are a few Marque members attending the Legends dinner this week as well as other events organised for DECAMAG and the V8’s.
Round 4 of the Sprint series is on July 12, the Reg’s etc are on our website and if you have any questions please give one of the race committee members a call, their numbers are also on our website. I must congratulate our Junior racers at the last Sprint event for being punctual and assisting with the event, well done!!
See you at the next pub dinner. Tuesday 8th July 2014.
MOPAR to ya!!

Trivia Night – DECAMAG Fundraiser. Saturday 17th May 2014
Contribution from Mel Chatfield. Photos Kat Martin.
A big thanks to those who came and enjoyed this year’s Trivia Night. Once again a fun night was had by all and to make it all worthwhile, with the entry fees and the number of auction items we managed to raise almost $2,000 for DECAMAG. It was good to see a number of tables get into the spirit of things and dress up to form their own themes with one table even dressing up in their pyjamas. Todd Martin once again did a wonderful job as host for the night and kept us entertained even with the challenging job of trying to auction off some of the items available. Big thanks to those who donated items for prizes and auction items. Once again a big thanks to the Rodders club for the use of their club house and the constant service at the bar.
Sponsors for the evening included: Mick Huggon, Jenny Goadby, Burson Auto Parts, Autopro, Auto One, Cheapa Auto Spares,Wesfil, Harvey Norman, BCF, The Good Guys, Freddy’s, Skinworx and Sheehan’s Meats.
Pub Dinners.
The May Pub Dinner, Tuesday 6th May was held at the Sun Hotel on Ross River Road Rising Sun. This was a good evening with a good turnout for the event. This Pub has been getting some good reviews lately and certainly becoming more popular.
The June Pub Dinner held on the 17th at the West End Pub wasn’t quite so popular on the night with Marque numbers down as well as their other patrons. Whether this was due to the weather or maybe because I changed the date from Wednesday Origin Day to Tuesday?
Pub Dinner for July is set for the Vale on the Tuesday the 8th, again this was moved back a day due to the 3rd Origin Game taking place on the 9th.
Marque Classic. Saturday 21st June 2014.
There were 15 contenders for this event but one had to withdraw due to mechanical problems and two with health issues so it was 12 cars to the starting block, however, the dramas continued for a while longer with Les and Janet running late after discovering a suspect tyre on their vehicle, Ron and Vicky Schilling picking up a screw in one of their tyres which meant a repair stop and lastly Big Wade discovered a steering bracket problem on his yellow Hot Rod and had to rush home and swap the hot rod for his purple Ute.
The basic rules for the event was based on Skimmo setting a time for the event starting at the Bohle Barn and culminating at the Lake Eacham Hotel in Yungaburra on Saturday late afternoon. No one knew the time he had set but those arriving early would be penalised 20 points per minute and those arriving later than the prescribed time would be penalised 1 point per minute. Questions were set covering events during the drive and incorrect answers incurred a 5 point penalty. Additional points could also be lost for road rules and traffic breaches.
Dinner and prize giving was held at the Lake Eacham Hotel in Yungaburra. A busy pub as there was a wedding reception going on in the next room and many people visiting the area eating there as well. Despite the large amount of people the service was excellant.
This event had one unusual request for entrants in that a $50 payment was requested with each registration. These funds went towards buying the tee shirts and having them screen printed, providing each entrant with a $20 note redemption at the start point and the balance of funds spent on buying boxed lollies etc. for second and third place getters plus 3 lucky door prizes. First place winner received a trophy by anonymous donation. Artwork for the tee shirt print done by our own Peter Brown and screen
printing cost donated by another anonymous donation.
The results were interesting to say the least and proved that Skimmo’s calculated time to complete the course were accurate. They had to include all the stops and unknown down time as a result of the many road works.
Peter Brown drove in on the exact time. This didn’t surprise me as Brownie is a stickler for this type of event, documenting every stop and maintaining exact speed limits. It’s this result from Brownie that leads me to believe in Skimmo’s calculation. Brownie had Suella’s Dad Graham as his off sider for the event.
Brownie didn’t win, he had one question wrong losing 5 points. Steve and Greta Hogan had the next closest time, one minute early losing 20 points. The winner for the event was Ron and Cynthia Zaverdinos with Cynthia claiming the prize on the grounds that Rod would have been there at least 20 minutes early and missed a few of the questions if it wasn’t for her.
Dan and Jane Luxton claimed second place followed by Brownie third. Les tried to make up some lost time and made up a bit too much losing the most points, however his efforts didn’t go to waste picking up a small award.
Special thanks to Gary and Janelle for their part in getting us all away at the start from the Bohle Barn carpark.
Dave Sterritt was one of the entrants who wasn’t able to make the start due to health reasons and has generously donated his $20 redemption to The Cancer Council Relay for Life. Good on ya Dave.
Humour.
“Good luck, Mr. Gorsky.”
On July 20, 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 lunar module, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. His first words after stepping on the moon, “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” were televised to earth and heard by millions. But just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark
“Good luck, Mr. Gorsky.”
Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival soviet cosmonaut. however, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs . Over the years, many people questioned Armstrong as to what the – ‘Good luck, Mr. Gorsky’ statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.
On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida , while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26-year -old question about Mr Gorsky to Armstrong. This time he finally responded because Mr. Gorsky had died, so Neil Armstrong felt he could now answer the question. Here is the answer to “who was Mr Gorsky”:
In 1938, when he was a kid in a small mid-western town , he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. his friend hit the ball, which landed in his neighbor’s yard by their bedroom window. His neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky,
“Sex! you want sex?! You’ll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!” It broke the place up.
Neil Armstrong’s family confirmed this is a true story. do pass it on, it’s too choice not to be shared.
